If you can make it you will also get your very own ECO Warrior T-shirt so let me know ur t-size!

If you could get this opportunity out to everyone who is creative, passionate and wants to make a difference to our planet that would be fantastic. We need as much hands on help as possible to get this exhibition off the ground.

Alan Everitt Memorial Fund. APPLY FOR MONEY!!

Starts: Thursday 18 Mar 2010, 02:40PM - Ends: Tuesday 31 May 2011, 02:40PM

MONEY IS AVAILABLE FROM THE ALAN EVERITT MEMORIAL FUND!!!!

Alan Everitt was Hatton Professor of English Local History at Leicester University.  He was a man of strong Christian faith, deeply observant of human beings.  He encouraged young people to cultivate their own powers of observation and think for themselves about the deep issues of faith.  This gift in Alan’s memory from his brother, Professor Francis Everitt, is intended to encourage youth work, especially in education and to reflect the great influence exerted by Alan on his teenage and early university years – an influence he states that has been critical to his own continued Christian life.

The aim is to use the gift to fund development of youth work in the Diocese of Leicester through education in the Performing Arts.  The project will be managed by Robin Rolls, Director of Youth Ministry based at Church House, Leicester.

Beth Marvin has been appointed the organiser for the year.  Her role will include the creation of a Performing Arts project in the Diocese which will encourage young people to work on and produce performances based on Christian themes.

The plan for the year will be to present one or more small pieces of Performing Arts activity, including one directed by Beth, and others which have already been proposed in areas in the city.  The venues for these will, it is hoped, be in churches, village halls, homes for the elderly, and such like, drawing the audience from a cross section of the communities.

Given that the project is successful, the aim for the future would be to set up young people’s groups in different parts of the Diocese where drama, music, and dance activities based on Christian themes could be explored, with the opportunity for performance.

Details will be posted here in the summer.

New Bishop's Youth Council members required!

Starts: Thursday 18 Mar 2010, 02:37PM - Ends: Monday 31 May 2010, 02:38PM

We're now recruiting for new members of the Bishop's Youth Council!

Young people on the youth council in recent times have been involved in live radio interviews throughout the country, met the Archbishop of York and met the Archbishop of Canterbury, been involved in the employing of youth workers, and regularly meeting with both Bishop Tim and Bishop Christopher at youth council gatherings every six weeks.  We have come to a time where we now need to recruit further members for the youth council so do you know anyone suitable??  Young people on the youth council need to be aged between 14 and 18, be vocal and passionate about their faith and their existence as a young person, and be dedicated to the work which we do.  On an average week this may mean only 10-15 min of looking at emails, checking websites but occasionally it could be up to an hour a week. Young people on the youth council also need to be connected to an Anglican church and able to get to our gatherings which are normally at Bishop’s Lodge on a Monday evening.  It’s worth mentioning that future activities for the youth council include a residential weekend away in the autumn, and further trips to the House of Lords to visit the Bishop.

To join the Bishop's Youth Council, e-mail robin@yp4l asking for the contact details of the new BYC chair, Beth Marvin!

Drugs comments on Premier Radio.

Starts: Thursday 03 Apr 2008, 11:48AM - Ends: Tuesday 08 Apr 2008, 11:49AM

I read in the press this morning that the advisory council are suggesting that Cannabis should remain as a Class C drug, and not be upgraded to a Class B drug, which some are suggesting.  It's a debate that has been raging for some time.

Cannabis was re-classified from Class B to Class C in January 2004, meaning that the penalties changed (I've put them below for you to have a look at).

MAXIMUM DRUG PENALTIES
Class A: Seven years for possession, life for supplying
Class B: Five years for possession, 14 for supplying
Class C: Two years for possession, 14 for supplying
So what do I think about this?  Well Cannabis is harmful, there's no doubt about that at all.  Every study, every report seems to confirm that using Cannabis is bad for you.  It's more likely to lead to Cancerous diseases, burns at a higher temperature than Tobacco, and is full of mroe toxins - but sadly the worst of its effects perhaps is that it is linked to various conditions of mental illness.
Strangely enough this week I've had conversations with 2 friends, both of whom are struggling with their friends who are serious Cannabis users - they're using Skunk a strong and more dangerous form of the drug.........and for both of the actual users, there are some developing issues of mental illness.
Now I could never give medical advice and neither could this website or the Diocese, but the facts are plain for all to see.
But there's another angle too isn't there?  Why (in a world where if we ever needed to stand up and be counted.......now is the time), do we want to use a drug which essentially relaxes us, and messes with our heads??  It takes away our ability to fight against wrong, to battle with everyday life decisions, to make good choices.  Why would we want to do that then I wonder?
If it were down to me I guess I would want to ask some questions about what it says to the world if we keep Cannabis as a class C drug - don't we then say that actually it's safe when it's plainly not??
The Diocese of Leicester would like to make it clear that Cannabis use is illegal.
